Urbino Tactical Stock production status (was: July)

July is a firm date for when our tooling will be completed for the Urbino Tactical Stock

I'm very sorry that it's a lot later than we indicated before.  On the other hand, it's a pretty firm date.  No more hand-waving.

Edit: We are now looking at first part of November 2010 for the Benelli M4.

Hey Mitch do you know for sure that the M1/M2 Urbino will work on the M3? I'll be buying one and don't want drop $245 on something so sweet and then not have it work ya know!!! That would just be a bummer. Have you done any testing with the M3????

Re: Urbino Tactical Stock production status (was: July)

We don't have an M3, so probably won't be doing any testing.  We can't say for sure whether it will work on the M3, but the first person who tries it will tell us whether it works.

The stocks are the same for the M1 and M3, both Benelli and Speedfeed stocks for the M1 work with the M3.  The Speedfeed stock for the Benelli is basically an 870 stock with a adapter plate between it and the receiver, it doesn't look very clean but until now it was the only shorter LOP stock available.  I'm looking forward to trying the Urbino stock on my M3.

Re: Urbino Tactical Stock production status (was: July)

Looks like it.

Some of these parts are getting ready to be sent out for some outside processes.

The others are in various stages of progress.  Steel is out being hardened, and other outside processes.  Mold bases being worked on.  A couple of things that we thought we could machine are having to be EDM burned.

We are looking like getting things close to completed here the end of the month or 1st week in July, for the first run, anyway.  We expect to have to fiddle around with the parts a little after that.

Here's a pic of the tooling of the main armature (for PROOF!):

Mitch,  Do you estimate the Beneiil M4 stock will be available to purchase the middle of this month or closer to the end of July?  Can't wait to get this on my shotgun!

Re: Urbino Tactical Stock production status (was: July)

Guys, it's looking like toward the end of July.  Here's a paraphrase of the sob story I received this week from the toolmakers:

The biggest mold, for what we call the stock armature, was damaged at some point and they are right now making a new one.  Their troubles were compounded by one of the chief moldmakers being out sick for a week.

Next week I am supposed to get my hands on first articles of the buttplate, buttpad and cheek riser.  We will test the butt pieces for fit, but final testing for fit can't be completed until we get a first article of the stock armature, and right now they can't tell me when I will see that.

After we verify all the parts for fit, they will go out to the texture house for a few days.  Then we will be done.

They are pretty confident all this will happen in July.  I will know more next week and will post photos of our progress.

Re: Urbino Tactical Stock production status (was: July)

The problem was that when they heat treated one of the molds it shrank or expanded or whatever, basically ruining the mold, so they had to make a new one.  I will be able to see first articles on 20 July.  After we approve the fitting, etc, the molds have to go out for texturing.

If it happens this month, it will be at the very end of the month.

Thanks for hanging in there, guys.  You can't imagine how big a project this has been for us.

Re: Urbino Tactical Stock production status (was: July)

Well, perfection takes time.  Thanks for your patience.

We were at the toolmakers' today to see first articles, but they didn't have anything for us yet.  They showed us where they are with the tooling, however.

The first part that will come out of the presses is the cheekpiece.  But that isn't very useful for test fitting without the armature (the main stock).  The armature is what has been causing them the most problems, and by any measure it's a challenging tool.  There are two separate inserts for each of the shotgun platforms we are supporting, plus inserts for the rails that support the cheekpiece.  The armature tooling looks like this:

240.jpg

The main armature inserts are at the lower right.  They have just been burned out with the EDM cores you can see at left (they look like stocks).  They have to make multiple EDM passes with each cavity.  Behind, at left, is part of the mold base.  The entire assembly weights 1,200 to 1,500 lbs.

They are about two or three weeks away from a first article with this mold.

This is very labor intensive work and is why most of our plastics manufacturing has gone to Asia, where such work can cost a quarter or a fifth of what it costs here in the US.

This is a photo of the tooling for the urethane rubber parts, the grip sleeve and the buttpad:

241.jpg

Again, there is a lot more work to do with this mold, but it's not as complicated as the bigger molds.  The small rods are triangular cores for the cushioning cavities we are molding into the buttpad.

So basically it's looking like the middle of August.  Sorry, guys.

I will try to keep you updated as I learn more myself.

So, which Dealer place the first order?  Are you filling orders from Dealers first or can we order a stock direct?
